CLEMSON-S CAROLINA

Martin, Gamecocks looking for win vs. Clemson

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) β€” South Carolina coach Frank Martin has a better understanding of his school’s rivalry with Clemson after losing his first two matchups with the Tigers. Now he’s ready to feel what it’s like on the winning side of the series.

Martin and the Gamecocks (5-3) will get the next chance against the Tigers (6-3) Friday night.

When Martin came from Kansas State after the 2011-12 season, he was accustomed to his rivalry games with Kansas also counting heavily in the Big 12 Conference chase so it took a bit to tap into the ferocity of this nonconference matchup.

But Martin said he’s soaked up the competition since then where the two Palmetto State schools jostle at everything from athletics to blood drives and publicity.

T25-UCONN-DUKE

Jones scores 21 to lead No. 2 Duke over UConn

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) β€” Freshman point guard Tyus Jones scored 21 points, Justise Winslow hit two key baskets late in the game and No. 2 Duke responded to a tongue lashing by coach Mike Krzyzewski to beat defending national champion Connecticut 66-56 on Thursday night.

Winslow and Jahlil Okafor β€” the other two members of the Blue Devils’ trio of talented freshmen β€” added 12 points apiece. Ahead 30-25 at the break, Duke (10-10) got off to a slow start in the second half and UConn (4-4) tied it, raising Coach K’s ire.

Amile Jefferson added 11 points and 13 rebounds for Duke in a game that had the feel and intensity of a NCAA tournament contest.

Ryan Boatright had 22 points to lead the Huskies. Kentan Facey added 14 points and Daniel Hamilton had 10.

APPALACHIAN ST-CHARLOTTE

Charlotte comes back over Appalachian State 75-65

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β€” Torin Dorn scored 14 points and Charlotte erased a halftime deficit and beat Appalachian State 75-65 on Thursday.

Appalachian State scored the first 10 points and the last six points of the first half and took a 32-27 at intermission.

Charlotte hit 4 of its first 6 shots of the second β€” including 3-pointers by Braxton Ogbueze and Terrence Williams β€” to tie at 37. An 11-4 run midway through the frame gave the 49ers a five-point lead and while the Mountaineers got it to two points on two occasions, they never got over the hump.

A pair of 3-pointers from Keyshawn Woods (12 points) on consecutive possessions gave Charlotte an eight point lead with 6:40 left. Ogbueze finished with 13 and Willie Clayton added 12.

Frank Eaves paced Appalachian State with 20 points, despite shooting 4 of 11 from the floor. He was 11 of 13 from the line.
