
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Β Health officials say someone has been diagnosed with a case of red measles in Mecklenburg County. Β
An unvaccinated individual was diagnosed with red measles (Rubeola) last week. Β The patient had traveled to a country with endemic red measles. Β
Officials say as a precaution, everyone who came in contact with the patient has been contacted. Β Preventative measures are being taken at this time and there is no immediate risk to the general public.Β
Red measles is a contagious respiratory disease that is caused by a virus. Β It is spread through the air through coughing and sneezing, according to a news release from the Mecklenburg County Public Information Department. Β
Symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and sore throat followed by a rash that spreads all over the body. Β
Measles can be prevented with the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine. Β
