Two Injured After Officer involved Shooting in Gastonia

Β GASTONIA, N.C.–Β A Gastonia Police detective was involved in a shooting on East Long Avenue in GastoniaΒ SaturdayΒ night.Β

According to police, Detective Jeff Wooten was inside a Quik Trip convenience store aroundΒ 10:25p.m.Β when he witnessed Brady Hines attacking the store clerk with a knife.Β

The clerk, Ryan Sherwood was stabbed several times and sustained serious injuries. He was transported to Caramont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia.

Detective Wooten, who was in full police duty uniform, intervened by pulling Hines away from Sherwood. Police say the confrontation resulted in Detective Wooten shooting Hines, who had a knife.Β

Hines has potentially life threatening injuries and was transported to Caramont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia. Β

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating and will present their findings to the Gaston County District Attorney’s Office.

The Gastonia Police Department Office of Professional Standards is conducting an administrative investigation. Detective Wooten has been placed on paid administrative leave, while an administrative investigation is conducted.

Detective Wooten, 51, is a veteran detective who has worked with the department since July 1988.Β
