WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) β USA Cycling is confirming that a site in downtown Winston-Salem has been selected as the home for an elite U.S. Olympic cycling training facility.
The Winston-Salem Journal reports (http://bit.ly/15CPdDh) USA Cycling spokesman Kevin Loughery confirmed Thursday the site will serve as a training center. Loughery said there are 19 cycling training sites around the country and three U.S. training facilities.
The projected site is a 42,000-square-foot building across from the Millennium Center, north of Business Interstate 40 and west of U.S. 52.
USA Cycling serves as the sport’s national governing body.
Winston-Salem emerged last March as the leading, and perhaps only, candidate for the center, the apparent result of the city’s reaction to the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic, a national road-racing event. The third-annual event will be held May 30-31.
