CHARLOTTE, NC — Drivers angry about an unused paved lane on I-485 will get their complaints heard. Right now, orange cones block off a new fourth lane in South Charlotte.
NC DOT doesn’t plan to use the extra space for at least five years. Now, Governor Pat McCrory and North Carolina Department of Transportation Secretary Tony Tata will meet with local leaders to review that plan.
“We will ask NC DOT to do what they can to improve the traffic flow through that part of 485,” said Charlotte Mayor Pro-Tem Michael Barnes. “I understand that there are some complicating factors with opening the lane, but we’re going to try to see what they’ll do for us.”
The lane will be converted into a toll lane in five years. Governor Pat McCrory says paving it now saved taxpayers $18 million.
