CHESTERFIELD, SC – An Amber Alert is in place for a 14-year-old girl in Chesterfield County, SC.
Alexis Ann Deas was last seen at New Heights Middle School in Jefferson. Investigators say her stepfather, Harland Melton, picked her up around 9:30 Friday morning, pretending she had a dentist appointment.
Alexis is about 5’2″ 125 pounds, with blue eyes and brown hair. Melton is 43 years old. 5’10” 150 pounds. They may be in a 1999 black Nissan Maxima. South Carolina tag IUF 593.
Police say the two may have been involved in an inappropriate relationship. A classmate told police she had her bookbag packed and that the two might be headed to Texas.
Investigators also say Melton is unpredictable and has a violent past. The Sheriff says he’s been arrested multiple times for assault and battery including on a child.
“He is very volatile when he becomes upset. And his employer has said that he’s actually a witness to him just being irate over the slighest little thing,” says Chesterfield County Sheriff Jay Brooks.
Alexis’ mom Sandra Melton tried to hold back tears as we spoke with her. “She needs to be home. She don’t belong out there. She belongs here. And I shouldn’t have to be doing this, at all,” Melton says.
