
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police say they charged a man for a cold case murder that happened in west Charlotte.
Investigators say Gary Hames stabbed Lottie Webb to death at her home on Ridge Avenue on January 7th, 2000. Β At the time, police were not able to identify any suspects.
In 2013, the case was re-opened by the CMPD Cold Case Unit and evidence from the case was submitted for DNA examination. Β Based on the evidence found, Hames was identified as the suspect.Β
Hames is currently in prison serving time for habitual breaking and entering charges. Β Police say he was been arrested over 46 times in Meckenburg County. Β
Police served Hames with warrants for murder, armed robbery and breaking and entering Thursday.
The CMPD Cold Case Unit has reviewed 143 cases since it began in 2008. Β Of those cases, 40 have been cleared and 25 of those were cleared by arrest. Β
