Should We Fine Parents for Overweight Kids?

Your kid’s weight could get you into trouble. Lawmakers are considering a plan that would fine parents of overweight children as much as $800. It’s being batted about in Puerto Rico right now. Once a kid has been identified, government workers would figure out a diet and exercise plan, but if the kids don’t shape up within 6 months, mom and dad have to pay.
Of course, parents are responsible in all kinds of ways for their children. If your kids destroy somebody’s property, guess who has to pay? You do. And if your kid has to be supervised by state agencies, guess who gets to pay for the costs of care, detention, or treatment? You do.
