GOLF-WOODS

Woods taking leave from tournament golf

UNDATED (AP)— Tiger Woods says his golf is not acceptable for the PGA Tour and he will not return until it is.

Woods shot a career-worst 82 to miss the cut in the Phoenix Open by 12 shots. He was playing poorly at Torrey Pines when he withdrew after 11 holes because of tightness in his back.

Woods said on his website that the injury is not related to the back surgery he had last spring. He says he is having physical therapy every day and feeling better.

But he says he needs work on his game. He says he wants to play the Honda Classic that starts Feb. 26, but he won’t play if he’s not tournament-ready. Woods says he expects to be playing soon.

OBIT-TARKANIAN

Hall of Fame coach dies

UNDATED (AP) — The basketball world is mourning the death of Hall of Famer Jerry Tarkanian, who passed away Wednesday at 84. Known for his battles with the NCAA and chewing on a towel while working the sidelines of games, Tarkanian died after being admitted to a Las Vegas hospital on Monday with difficulty breathing and an infection.

Tarkanian led the University of Nevada-Las Vegas to the Final Four four times, and won it all in 1990.

Said Duke and U.S. national team coach Mike Krzyzewski (shuh-SHEF’-skee) of the man known as Tark the Shark: “He had an uncanny ability to take star players, and mold them into cohesive and selfless teams. That is a testament to how well he related to his players. They adored him. As coaches, we admired him as well.”

He ended up beating the NCAA, too, collecting a $2.5 million settlement after suing the organization for trying to run him out of college basketball. But he was bitter to the end about the way the NCAA treated him while coaching, and carried the grudge the rest of his life.

Tarkanian’s career spanned 31 years with stops at three Division I schools. He had a short stop in the NBA with the Spurs.

MLB-PADRES

Done deal with Shields

UNDATED (AP) — Pitcher James Shields has finalized his four-year, $75 million contract with the San Diego Padres, the biggest free agent deal in club history. Shields helped Kansas City reach the World Series last season but declined a $15.3 million qualifying offer from the Royals. The right-hander is 114-90 with a 3.72 ERA in nine seasons, including a 14-8 mark with a 3.21 earned run average last year.

He’s the latest addition by first-year general manager A.J. Preller, who in December acquired sluggers Matt Kemp, Justin Upton and Wil Myers, as well as Derek Norris and Will Middlebrooks.

Also in the majors:

— Milwaukee Brewers All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy will miss four to six weeks of spring training because of a strained right hamstring. Lucroy says he aggravated the injury while sprinting recently in preparation for spring training.

— The Miami Marlins have been awarded the 2017 All-Star game. A person familiar with the decision says an announcement by baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred is planned for this week at Marlins Park.

— Right-hander Tyler Clippard and the Oakland Athletics have avoided salary arbitration by working out a one-year, $8.3 million deal. Clippard was 7-4 with a 2.18 ERA in 75 relief appearances last year for Washington.

— Washington Nationals reliever Jerry Blevins has won his salary arbitration case and will earn $2.4 million this year instead of the team’s $2.2 million. Blevins went 2-3 with a 4.87 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 57 1/3 innings over 64 appearances last season.

— The Atlanta Braves have signed relievers Jose Veras and Matt Capps to minor league deals. Veras split last season with the Cubs and Astros, and Capps hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2012 because of shoulder issues.
