GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — Johnny Cueto would like to have a new contract before opening day.

The 20-game winner knows that the Cincinnati Reds might not be able to afford to pay him the going rate for a No. 1 starter, leaving his status this season in doubt. Cueto is in the final year of his current contract, making $10 million. If the sides can’t reach agreement, Cueto could be traded at midseason or leave as a free agent afterward.

The 29-year-old is among the best in the majors. Since 2010, he’s gone 65-32 with a 2.73 ERA.

Manager Bryan Price says that Cueto deserves to be paid among the best in the game.

The Reds opened camp on Thursday with the first workout by pitchers and catchers.
