CHARLOTTE, NC — A group of citizens fighting a plan to toll parts of I-77 are rallying support against the pay-to-drive scheme.

Thursday, Widen I-77 held the second of two public meetings this week to update the community on the toll lane issue.  The group has filed an injunction to stop the proposal to add hot lanes to the interstate.

“I can’t understand why we’re spending the money to put in tolls with a company that’s bankrupt in two other locations, in a market that doesn’t seem to be able to support them, at a cost that the average person can’t afford,” said Cornelius resident John Eberle.

The NC DOT has said tolls could be as high as $21 a day for commuters who drive the 27 miles of proposed toll lanes at rush hour.
