NEWTON, NC– Newton police say two children were attacked and mauled by two Rottweiler that belonged to their mother’s boyfriend. Police say the mother was at work at the time.
The mother’s boyfriend, Christopher Amell, says he let the dogs out of their kennels for cleaning and went back into the home for a few minutes. He says when he returned the dogs were attacking the children. Amell was able to put the children in a parked car while he secured the dogs.
Both children were transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center with severe injuries. However, the 6 year old was later airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Newton Police took both dogs to the Catawba County Animal Shelter. The Department of Social Services has also been notified. The investigation is continuing.
