WASHINGTON, D.C. — Concerns over a proposed nuclear agreement between the U.S. and Iran have reached a boiling point. Β Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke before Congress Tuesday, warning the White House that any deal with Iran could put the world at risk.
The Obama Administration says Iran will never be permitted to build a nuclear weapon. Β Israel is concerned that allowing them to develop nuclear technology could put more weapons in the hands of Islamic militants.
“The greatest danger facing our world is the marriage of militant Islam with nuclear weapons,” said Netanyahu. Β “To defeat ISIS and let Iran get nuclear weapons would be to win the battle but lose the war.”
“Prime Minister Netanyahu has not offered any kind of viable alternative that would achieve the same verifiable mechanism to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon,” said the President.
Local lawmakers are reacting to Netanyahu’s controversial speech. Β Rep. Robert Pittenger says the Prime Minister is uniquely qualified to warn Congress against a bad deal with Iran. Β Rep. Alma Adams blasted House Speaker John Boehner for inviting the Prime Minister to Congress, saying it shows disrespect to the President, and breaks diplomatic protocols.
