CHARLOTTE, N.C. — CMPD is unveiling a new ‘Bait Phone’ operation that will target people who are stealing cell phones in Uptown.
Police say larcenies are up by 67% in the Uptown area and cell phone thefts make up approximately 1/3 of those thefts. Most of the thefts happen at nightclubs, bars and restaurants in center city, according to CMPD.
The objective of the bail phone operation is: to leverage social media to raise awareness about cell phone theft, promote good behavior by rewarding people who turn in unattended cell phones to management or staff and arrest suspects who steal cell phones.
CMPD will host a news conference at 2pm about the new operation.
