CHARLOTTE, NC — Girls on the nationally ranked Myers Park High School basketball team say they’re disappointed they can’t play in a national championship tournament next month. Β
Tuesday, the State High School Athletic Association Board voted unanimously to deny the team’s request to play in the Dick’s Sporting Goods National Championship in New York City. Β A state rule prevents teams from playing games after their season is completed.
“They’ll be disappointed, but it was never their goal to start with,” said Head Coach Barbara Nelson. Β “To be the best team they could be was their goal and is their goal. Β To win the state championship was their second goal, and they’ve accomplished those two things. Β So this was icing on the cake. Β Now, we’ll still eat the cake.”
Myers Park is ranked number 4 in USA Today’s national poll. Β They finished the season 29 and 1.
