CHARLOTTE, NC — An NC DOT plan to build toll lanes on Independence Boulevard from Uptown to Matthews was up for debate in east Charlotte Monday night. Β We’ve been covering this controversial proposal since 2010.

It’s a two-part plan. Β The first part would convert the existing bus lanes into toll lanes from I-277 to Wallace Lane in East Charlotte. Β Then, one or two toll lanes would be constructed in the median from Conference Drive to I-485 in Matthews during a widening project.

At a public meeting Monday night, east Charlotte residents said they were pleased with the state’s progress. Β “I think they’ve done a wonderful job. Β I think it’s going to upset a lot of people, but it’s something that has to be done, and it’s going to be done,” said Father Rich Bakley of St. Michael’s Anglican Church.

The NC DOT will hold another meeting on the project Tuesday night at Matthews Town Hall from 4pm to 7pm.
