CHARLOTTE, NC —Β The Wanda Sue Larson child abuse case led to a complete overhaul of the Union County DSS program. Β
In addition to Larson, Social Work Program Administrator Janet Curlee and social worker Megan Long were fired. Β Larson’s boss, Kevin Williams, was suspended and later demoted. Β He also took a pay cut of more than $13,000.
“We are now doing so much better in cooperation with the state and all our partners to ensure that the children are safe in Union County,” said Union County Director of Human Services Richard Matens.
Union County DSS supervisors will now meet at least bi-weekly with each social worker. Β Supervisors were not required to meet before. Β The county also doubled its child intake staff from two to four experts and added a supervisor. Β And DSS created a quality assurance position to review investigations and child files.
