Β CHARLOTTE, NC —Β 31 women have accused Dr. Fidelis Edosomwan of violating the sacred trust between doctor and patient.
The doctor is facing more than 30 counts of sexual assault and battery. Those who worked closest with the man say those allegations can’t be true.
“Very shocking. Very shocking,” said Evelyn Miller. “Because I said then I know it’s not true.”
Β
Miller worked as a nurse for Edosomwan, the man charged with sexually assaulting patients. Β She was one of 20 employees, patients and friends who came out to support the embattled physician.
Β
Police first arrested the doctor in February, after two victims said he exposed himself and touched them inappropriately during exams at the Americare clinics on Milton Road and West Sugar Creek Road. In March, he was charged with 32 additional counts.
Β
Employees who have worked with Dr. Edosomwan for years say the procedure was to always have a nurse present in the room when the doctor was with a patient. And that’s why they believe him to be innocent.
Β
“I’ve been with Doc for 90 to 95 percent of the people that he has treated here,” said Lori, a nurse at the Americare Clinic on Milton Rd. “There is no way that Doc has done what they are saying he has done. I was in the room, with him.”
Β
“During my visits here, he was very professional,” said Betty Allen El Sheikh, a patient of Dr. Edosomwan. “I was never in the room alone with him. He always had a staff member”
Β
Victims tell a different story.
Β
“Every time I went over there, he tried to touch my breasts and another thing that was the trigger point was when I went and he made comments about my underwear,” said a victim who did not want her identity revealed.
Β
Edosomwan’s supporters say that even with 31 women accusing him, the doctor will be vindicated.
Β
“They made sure that there is always a nurse in there with that patient,” said Miller. “The doctor was never left alone with that patient. So the ones that’s complaining, I just can’t understand it, because I know it’s not true.”
Β
Dr. Edosomwan has agreed to stop practicing at the request of the North Carolina Medical Board.
