Police Identify Driver Involved In Fatal Hit And Run

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police have identified a driver involved in a fatal hit and run in south Charlotte. 

Investigators say Jefferson James was driving a moped on South Boulevard Wednesday afternoon when he was struck by a Nissan Murano driven by Elmer Galeas-Padilla at the intersection of New Bern Station Court.  

Galeas-Padilla is accused of leaving the scene of the accident.  Police are currently searching for Galeas-Padilla.  James was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

Investigators say the suspect was wearing an electronic monitor at the time of the accident.  He has since been accused of cutting off the ankle monitor near I-485 and Arrowood Road.

Anyone with information on Galeas-Padilla’s whereabouts is asked to call 911 immediately.
