A new bill that would make it a felony for public school students to assault a teacher still has groups worried, even after it was changed to exempt children with disabilities. The Senate Education Committee voted Wednesday to create the penalty if the alleged assault by someone at least 16 years old occurs on school property.
According to the Department of Public Instruction, more than 1,300 assaults occurred on school personnel in the last school year. Some senators worry the definition of assault is too broad, and could unnecessarily give some children a felony record for life.
