
Β CHARLOTTE, N.C.– The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Β and the Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) Police Department, is conducting an investigation after a student was shot on the campus of JCSU Sunday morning.
Officers say they responded to the campus to assist the JCSU Campus Police with an assault with a deadly weapon call. Β Upon arrival, the victim was found inside of a car suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper right shoulder.

According officials, a JCSU Police Officer heard shots being fired around 2:15a.m. and saw a suspect get into a burgundy car that had several other people inside. The suspects then attempted to flee the campus in the car.

Β The JCSU Officer immediately attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle, but the suspects refused to stop. Β Officers who were responding to the call, saw the suspect vehicle leaving Β campus at a high rate of speed and assisted the JCSU Officer in pursuit of the vehicle.Β

Police say that after a brief pursuit, the suspect vehicle crashed at the intersection of Beatties Ford Road and Russell Avenue and four people were detained from inside of the car. Three guns and some marijuana were located inside of the car and seized as evidence.

Β The suspects were transported to CMPD headquarters where they were interviewed by detectives. Β Β Β
Β Detectives charged the suspects listed below for their involvement with this incident:

Β Everett Phifer, 21, was charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury, Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle, Possession of a Firearm on School Grounds and Discharging a Firearm on School Grounds

Β Elijah Craig, 20, was charged with Possession of Firearm by a Convicted Felon
Β
Juan Leon, 19, was charged with Discharging a Firearm on School Property and Possession of a Firearm on School Grounds
Β
Shalique Edmond, 21, was charged with Possession of Marijuana and Failure to Heed Blue Lights and Siren

Detectives also confirmed that none of the suspects are students at JCSU or ever have been students of the school. Β It was determined that the suspects were on campus in an attempt to attend a party. They were denied access since they were not students. Β Β
