CHARLOTTE, NC- Four people are in custody after a student was shot on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University early Sunday morning.
Police arrested 21-year-old Everett Phifer, 20-year-old Elijah Craig, 19-year-old Juan Leon, and 21-year-old Shalique Edmond. They face multiple charges.
Investigators say the four were attempting to attend a party in the gymnasium but were turned away because they aren’t students.
According to police, members of that group opened fire around 2:15am, hitting a student inside a car in the right shoulder. School officials say the student was not targeted and has non life-threatning injuries.
Police chased the suspects and arrested them at the intersection of Beatties Ford Road and Russell Auenue. They found three guns and marijuana inside the car.
JCSU President Dr. Ronald Carter says it’s the first shooting ever on campus. He describes having to get the phone call. “It’s a nightmare,” Carter says. “That’s the thing that Presidents and Chancellors across the country do not want to receive. And in this case I received it, but I’m very proud of the staff, the administrators, the CMPD, how quickly they responded according to our protocol.”
Police have not identified the student who was injured in the shooting.
