Residents Living Near Duke’s Coal Ash Ponds Informed To Not Drink Well Water

BELMONT, N.C. — Officials say some wells along the Allen Steam Station and the Marshall Steam Station could be contaminated with toxic heavy metals.

Fifty-three people who live along the Allen Steam Station in Belmont and 19 families who live near the Marshall Steam Station on Lake Norman received letters about the possible contamination. Β

The letters say wells could be contaminated with Vanadium and Chromium 6. Β Officials are advising residents who live near Duke’s coal ash ponds to not drink or cook with water from their wells.

Residents have been asked to have their wells tested again in a month. Β It is not clear at this time whether residents will have to cover the tests at their own expense.

Several residents have contacted attorneys because they want more information about the possible contamination. Β
