WASHINGTON, D.C. —Β Greensboro native Loretta Lynch is officially the first African-American female Attorney General in history.

The Senate approved her confirmation Thursday afternoon. Β President Obama nominated Lynch in November, but a battle over an unrelated bill put her nomination on hold. Β Obama says Lynch’s confirmation ensures that America is better positioned to keep the nation safe.

Β “And she knows that one of the things that I want to work with her on is making sure that all around the country, we are rebuilding trust with respect to our police forces,” said the President.

Lynch had to wait more than 164 days for confirmation by the Senate. Β That’s longer than any other Attorney General nominee since the Reagan administration.
