CHARLOTTE, NC — Wednesday, all officers in CMPD Metro Division will begin wearing body cameras. Β WCCB Charlotte got an inside look at the training those officers are receiving.
They will turn on their cameras during calls for service and traffic stops, but not for general conversations, or when witnesses are giving statements. Β Residents in the Metro Division like the idea of body cameras.
“We think it is because it would cut down on a lot of ‘who said’ and ‘who did what’. Β It would be on camera,” said northwest Charlotte resident Gwendolyn Johnson.
Video will be kept for 3 years for misdemeanor crimes, and 20 years for felonies. Β State law supposedly keeps the video from being made public.
Officers in the Providence Division begin wearing body cameras on Friday. Β All 13 CMPD divisions should have them by October.
