MINNEAPOLIS (AP) β€” Artistic director Joe Dowling is leaving a monumental legacy as he prepares to step down after two decades of leading Minneapolis’ Guthrie Theater.

Dowling guided the Guthrie to a new, $125 million complex in 2006. The 285,000-square-foot building features three stages and was designed by acclaimed French architect Jean Nouvel.

Dowling points to the new Guthrie as one of his biggest accomplishments. The old Guthrie had outgrown its original space where it was founded by Sir Tyrone Guthrie in 1963.

Dowling is preparing to direct his final play at the Guthrie, the Irish tragedy “Juno and the Paycock,” in May. The 66-year-old Dublin native hands over control this summer to Joseph Haj (hahzh) of PlayMakers Repertory Theatre in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
