CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β The Carolina Panthers have announced special teams coordinator Bruce DeHaven has taken a leave of absence to deal with health concerns. It’s unclear when the 66-year-old DeHaven will return, and the Panthers didn’t release any additional information on the health concerns.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) β Suspended forwards Demetrius Henry and Shamiek Sheppard won’t be returning to South Carolina’s basketball team next year. Gamecocks coach Frank Martin said yesterday that the 6-foot-9 Henry, 6-6 Sheppard and guard Reggie Theus Jr. would all transfer from South Carolina.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β Richard Petty Motorsports has hired Kevin “Bono” Manion to crew chief Sam Hornish Jr. beginning this weekend at Kansas Speedway. Manion replaces Drew Blickensderfer, who has been offered another position in the organization. Manion was the crew chief for Jamie McMurray in 2010 when the duo won the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β Rico Abreu, the reigning USAC national champion and winner of this year’s Chili Bowl, is among the 12 drivers named to NASCAR’s latest “Next” class. The Next program is designed to spotlight NASCAR’s emerging stars, and has included in its previous four classes 2014 Sprint Cup rookie of the year Kyle Larson and reigning Xfinity Series champion Chase Elliott.
