NC DOT Moving Forward With I-77 Toll Lane Project

CHARLOTTE, NC — Local officials and residents are crying foul, but NC DOT says it is moving forward with plans to let a private developer put toll lanes on I-77.

A behind-the-scenes addendum to the I-77 widening project’s comprehensive agreement would put a penalty on building a general-purpose lane between Cornelius and Mooresville. Β Many are calling for the state to step in.

“It needs to be investigated further,” said Cornelius resident Bill Sykes. Β “The things that are going on right now need to stop.”

“I’m beginning to sense that perhaps we need to be putting the brakes on this project and looking at it a little more closely,” said Mecklenburg County Commissioner Matthew Ridenhour (D).

I-77 Mobility Partners is scheduled to close on the $655 million project on May 17.
