KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) β Joey Logano drove his No. 22 Ford to a fast lap of 192.397 mph yesterday, easily besting the speed of Kasey Kahne and winning the pole for tonight’s Sprint Cup race. The winner of last fall’s Chase race at Kansas, Logano cruised to his 12th career pole but first on the fast 1 1/2-mile track near downtown Kansas City.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β The Carolina Panthers’ top two draft picks were unable to finish rookie minicamp practices because of minor injuries. Linebacker Shaq Thompson left halfway through yesterday’s practice because of a strained hamstring after slipping on the grass field. Later Devin Funchess was carted off early to get an IV for leg cramps.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) β North Carolina has signed guard Kenny Williams and forward Luke Maye to play basketball next season. Williams, a 6-foot-4 guard from Midlothian, Virginia, was originally committed to VCU, but reopened his recruitment after coach Shaka Smart left for Texas.
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) β Carl Edwards spoke with NASCAR president Mike Helton yesterday about the finish of last week’s race at Talladega, which ended under green despite a massive wreck. Edwards was hit by Casey Mears, causing his No. 19 Toyota to spin sideways.
