KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) β Jimmie Johnson stayed on the track during a late caution to take over the lead, then held off hard-charging Kevin Harvick to win the rain-delayed Sprint Cup race at Kansas Speedway. Johnson was chased across the line by Harvick and Hendrick Motorsports teammates Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon as the clock ticked past midnight into Sunday.
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) β A.J. Allmendinger has signed a five-year contract extension to drive for JTG Daugherty in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup series through the 2020 season. The new contract comes just over a week after Kroger announced it will increase its primary sponsorship of the team from half of the season to two-thirds of the 36-race schedule. That deal means that the No. 47 car is almost fully sponsored through the 2017 season.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β Running back Cameron Artis-Payne is hoping there’s enough room for two Cams in the Carolina Panthers’ backfield β him and quarterback Cam Newton. He didn’t think he could use the name when he arrived at Auburn, where Newton’s legendary status prompted him to go by a different name while playing for the Tigers.
WASHINGTON (AP) β Bryce Harper did it again, extending his remarkable homer streak with a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth inning that sent the Washington Nationals over the Atlanta Braves 8-6 Saturday. Harper homered for the sixth time in his last three games, one off the major league record set by Shawn Green in 2002. At 22, Harper had already become the youngest player in big league history to hit five home runs in two games.
