Β CHARLOTTE, NC — A City Council member is blasting Charlotte residents for not showing up to a public hearing on the city’s budget.
Councilwoman Lawana Mayfield got upset after only seven people spoke Monday night on City Manager Ron Carlee’s budget recommendations. Β Carlee wants to increase property taxes and eliminate the 47 solid waste fee. Β The plan is part of an effort to dig the city out of a $22 million deficit.
“If we don’t hear from you, then the decisions that we’re making are going to be made without your voice at the table,” said Mayfield.
The budget shortfall is mainly due to the loss of the business privilege tax and a county property revaluation that came in below what was expected. Β
Council will make changes to the budget on Wednesday. Β They have to adopt it on June 8.
