Fans Pack Charlotte Motor Speedway for Pole Night

CONCORD, NC — Fans packed Charlotte Motor Speedway for Thursday’s Pole Night.  May is Motorsports Month in North Carolina, and Round Two of the blockbuster of racing is in full gear.

55 years of racing at Charlotte Motor Speedway, and for Jerry “Snoop Dog” Rudisill of Newton, he’s been here since the beginning.  “Been here so long, and everyone knows someone and we keep coming back and coming back.”

Jerry admits the price has gone up since the ’60s, but it’s a cost, $400 – $500 for him, that he says is not a problem.  “I ain’t worried about it," he said.  “You going to spend it anyway.  You gotta enjoy life.  That’s what it’s all about.  Enjoying life.”

Tom Burkett is from Winston-Salem.  He has been camping in the infield for more than 25 years.  This year, he bought a new camper in Charlotte to ensure a good time.  “It’s just all out,” he said.  “Everything you do, have a great time.  I just bought a camper to come to the race, and that’s what it’s pulled for to come to the race.  You do everything you can to enjoy the experience.”

In the infield RV camp, fans who have been coming for decades like Tom are introducing younger fans like Austin Khatib, also of Winston-Salem, who is now back for his second year.  “It’s a great experience,” said Austin.  “You get to hang out with a lot of cool people.  I’m just thankful they bring me along with them.”
