Β RALEIGH, NC — A veto battle may be in the works over a religious exemption bill in the North Carolina legislature. Β It would allow magistrates and some Register of Deeds employees to opt out of performing same-sex marriage duties because of their religious beliefs.
The House passed the Senate bill Thursday. Governor Pat McCrory says he will veto the bill. Β McCrory released a statement saying despite one’s personal religious beliefs, “…no public official who voluntarily swears to support and defend the Constitution and to discharge all duties of their office should be exempt from upholding that oath.”
The State House and Senate passed the bill with enough margins to override a veto.
