CHARLOTTE, NC — City Council was briefed Monday night on a civil rights ordinance that would address racial profiling and police surveillance.
City Council members put off a decision on the plan back in January, and asked CMPD to do a review on how it would be implemented. Β Monday, the police department laid out the policy and exactly how it would target illegal profiling.
Local groups in attendance say while they still have some concerns, they’re pleased with the ordinance.
“I think it’s incredible that the City of Charlotte is doing this,” said Hector Vaca, Local Director of Action NC. Β “The City of Charlotte stands to be an example for many cities around the nation.”
CMPD has already hired a data analyst whose job is to look for patterns of racial profiling. Β Council members will consider adopting the ordinance during a public hearing next week.
