CHARLOTTE, NC — A video rant by a high school principal threatens a teacher.
Tonight the school district says the Harding University High School principal is being disciplined for his actions. Teachers and parents say there is a pattern of bad behavior and more needs to be done.
“I heard that the principal, he’s always a negative attitude towards the parents, or towards the teachers, whenever, you know, they have problems,” says West Charlotte resident Pikki McDonald.
McDonald has a son in ninth grade. She was not surprised to hear about principal John Floyd’s recent appearance in a profanity-laced cell phone video that went public, a video that made its way to the CMS offices.
The video shows the principal at Harding University High School recording a message into his cell phone after a fight at the school. In that message he talks about why a teacher contacted someone off campus after the incident. It also references the fact that the school could get “shot up” because of those actions. It winds up threatening that teacher.
Floyd is in his first year as principal at the school, and a teacher who didn’t want to appear on camera told me that Floyd is no stranger to controversy, saying:
“It’s not the first time, but this time it went public and that’s a good thing.”
The teacher we spoke to says Floyd has not been suspended.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools released this statement on the matter:
“The principal deeply regrets the incident. The Learning Community Superintendent, when notified, took immediate action and the incident was handled in accordance with the code of conduct.”
A code that prohibits harassing or threatening fellow employees.
“If they’re up under that pressure constantly, something is going to happen,” says West Charlotte resident Nathaniel Crenshaw, whose three sons all attended Harding. “But I don’t think anybody’s boss should be able to talk to them and treat them like that.”
“You need to step up, you know, as a principal,” says McDonald. “Not just lash out at everybody else.”
I called and left a message for Principal Floyd, but he has yet to return my call.
Harding University High School currently has 15 teaching vacancies listed on the CMS web site.
