
CONCORD, N.C.– One person died in a single car crash in Concord early Saturday morning.Β
Police responded to the accident on Central Heights Drive around 1:35 a.m. Saturday. Β They say Steve Sankar, 24, was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo southeast on Central Heights Drive when he ran off the right side of the road hitting a tree stump and rolling over just past the Kiser Woods Drive intersection. Β
Devon Hemmingway, 23, of Tabor City, N.C. was ejected from the passenger seat of the vehicle. Hemmingway was transported to Carolinas Medical Center Northeast and pronounced dead due to the fatal injuries sustained in the crash.Β
Sankar, the driver, sustained minor injuries and was transported to Carolinas Medical Center Northeast and later released. Β
He is charged with one count of felony death by motor vehicle, one count of careless and reckless driving and one count of disorderly conduct. Β He is under a $250,000 bond in the Cabarrus County Jail.
Police say both alcohol and speed were contributing factors in the crash and neither occupant was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.Β
