Charleston Shooting Suspect Arrested in Shelby, NC

SHELBY, N.C. – Dylann Roof, the suspect in the mass shooting in Charleston was arrested in Shelby, NC and is currently in custody at Shelby Poilce Department.

Investigators say police stopped Dylann Roof at 74 and Plato Lee Rd. west of Shelby after a call directly to the Kings Mountain Police Department about a suspicious vehicle in the neighborhood. Police stopped the car, discovering Dylann Roof was the driver. Dylann cooperated with police as they took him into custody. Police confirmed that they confiscated a gun that was in the black Hyundai Elantra he was driving. The type of gun has not yet been released.

Dylann remains in Shelby Police custody and will make his first court appearance Friday morning in Shelby. Cleveland Co. Clerk of Court states no cameras will be allowed in the courtroom. The FBI are also present at Shelby Police Department and Charleston Police are en route.

Police have also revealed that Dylann stopped to use an ATM on Providence Rd. in Charlotte, around 5:45 am Thursday morning.

UPDATE: Roof was transported to Cleveland County courthouse Thursday afternoon where he waived his right to extradition, resulting in his transfer back to Charleston, SC.
