Mecklenburg County Breaks Ground On Next Phase Of Mathews’ Sportsplex

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Representatives from the Town of Matthews and Mecklenburg County broke ground Monday on phase two of the $32 million Sportsplex Facility.

The Sportsplex will add more multi-purpose playing fields and a stadium with a 2,700 seat capacity.

Some additional features in the second phase of the Sportsplex include four new synthetic multipurpose fields, two natural grass fields to the right of the park entrance, a field house with men’s and women’s locker rooms and parking for 1,200 vehicles.

The first phase of the Sportsplex was completed in 2013 with five playing fields for rugby, lacrosse, soccer and other sports. Since its opening, the facility has hosted major tournaments, drawing athletes from across the Southeast to Matthews.

The Town has contributed $2 million toward the overall project.

Completion of the second phase is scheduled for late 2016.
