COLUMBIA, SC — People packed a funeral service Thursday in Columbia for the last of the nine victims of the Charleston shooting.
The Reverend Daniel Lee Simmons, Sr., remembered as a family man, devoted pastor and a former military man. His daughter delivered an emotional tribute.
“I knew him as ‘Daddy,'” said Rose Ann Simmons. “I’ve been told all my life that ‘You are just like your daddy”, and for a long time I did not want to admit that, but the older I get, I realize I am just like my Daddy.”
People have donated close to a million dollars to the families of the Charleston Nine. That includes a $100,000 donation from the Carolina Panthers. There’s also word that anonymous donors have given more than $3 million to establish a scholarship fund in the name of the church’s pastor, Reverend Clementa Pinckney. A non-profit corporation has been established to handle the fund.
