CONCORD, NC – A local high school teacher and coach was arrested and charged with having a sexual relationship with a student.
His players say they do not believe the allegations, but Kannapolis Police say they have “valuable” evidence.
Investigators with the Kannapolis Police Department say they received an anonymous tip into Crime Stoppers that 31-year-old Ricky Durden Jr. had a sexual relationship with a student.
Durden is a teacher at Jay M. Robinson High School in Concord. According to Cabarrus County Schools, Durden also coached girl’s track in addition to JV and Varsity football.
Kannapolis Police arrested Durden Saturday after warrants went out for his arrest on four counts of sexual activity with a student.
The arrest happened at his home in Kannapolis.
WCCB went to his home Monday afternoon, but no one came to the door.
Neighbors had nothing but good things to say about him, and called Durden a “family man” who attended neighborhood get-togethers with his wife and son.
Durden’s Facebook page shows pictures of his family and videos of his time spent spent in the Army, dating back to 2010.
On Monday, football players who played for Durden say he was not at practice.
Durden became a teacher at Jay M. Robinson High School in August of 2014.
Several football players who played for Durden say he was the most likeable and approachable coach on staff.
A spokesperson with Cabarrus County Schools says the district is working closely with police.
Durden has been suspended pending the outcome of a personnel investigation.
Kannapolis Police say they’re not releasing much information to protect the victim.
