Queen City Hosts 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup

CHARLOTTE, NC —Β Thousands of fans packedΒ BankΒ ofΒ AmericaΒ StadiumΒ Wednesday night for a different type of football: the international soccer tournament known as the Gold Cup.

Charlotte is becoming a soccer destination, hosting several international matches. Β That has some hopingΒ weΒ will get a major league soccer team.

While there are no plans for an expansion team in Charlotte right now, the city is at least on the radar. Β Wednesday’sΒ GoldΒ Cup double-header just the latest example of whyΒ CharlotteΒ would beΒ attractive to theΒ MLS.

The Queen City certainly showing its soccer support, and will be back in the international spotlight in just 10 days. Β OnΒ July 25th, theΒ ChampionsΒ CupΒ comes to town, asΒ Chelsea will face Paris Saint-Germain in a friendly match at BankΒ of America Stadium.

Area soccer fans are loving it, and wantΒ more of itΒ in the future.

“Definitely, I think soccer’s really big in Charlotte and the surrounding areas,” said Kannapolis resident HectorΒ Ramirez.Β  “We’re doing big things in the Club level. Β We’ve got Charlotte Independence out here. Β Soccer’s growing, and I think Charlotte needs to realize, and they have realized, and that’s why they keep coming back.”

Major LeagueΒ SoccerΒ is expanding. Β It could have 24 teams by 2018, including aΒ new franchiseΒ inΒ Atlanta.
