CHARLOTTE, NC — Two Confederate memorials that were vandalized in Charlotte will be cleaned and restored.
The City of Charlotte removed a monument near Old City Hall in Uptown that was spray-painted with the word “racist” to have it cleaned. Mecklenburg County has hired a company to clean a monument at Memorial Stadium that was smeared with concrete.
County Commissioners have yet to decide if that monument will be moved.
“Whatever we decide to do as a board, we need five votes, to make whatever happens that we decide to do will be the right thing, at the right time, for the right reasons,” said Commissioner Vilma Leake (D).
The city says it plans to return the monument to its location outside Old City Hall once it is cleaned. It is not clear how long that process will take.
