MLB-SCHEDULE
Busy day of play in baseball
UNDATED (AP) — Seven games are on the day-side portion of the baseball schedule today. In Washington the Nationals and Mets are putting the finishing touches on a three-game series. The National League East leaders have split the first two games, so the Nats have a two-game lead over the New Yorkers. The pitching matchup has Jordan Zimmerman going for the home team against Noah Syndergaard.
The world champion Giants start the day 2 1/2 games back of the Dodgers in the National League West. This afternoon San Francisco is in Southern California for a game with the Padres while the Dodgers are tangling with the Braves in Atlanta.
The rest of the afternoon card has the Cubs playing the Reds in Cincinnati in the first of two games, while the Rays are in Philadelphia, the Brewers are home to the Indians and the Rangers play the Rockies in Colorado.
The Yankees look to build on their 4 ½-game lead in the American League East this evening. They start the day in first place with Toronto in second and Baltimore and Tampa Bay tied for third five back. Tonight the Yankees are once again playing host to the Orioles, after beating the visitors last night 3-2. This is the second game of a three-game set. The Blue Jays are in Oakland to face the Athletics.
The status of Angels star Mike Trout remains unknown. He was a late scratch for last night’s game against the Twins in Anaheim, California, with a sore left heel. The two-time All-Star MVP said he felt an aching discomfort while walking around after waking up yesterday. The Angels, by the way, have won six straight to take over first place from Houston in the American League West. The Astros are home to the Red Sox this evening.
Pittsburgh and the Royals play once again in Kansas City tonight. By beating Gerrit Cole and the Bucs last night the Royals went 20 games over .500.
In Chicago this evening the visiting Cardinals are looking for their 60th win of the season as they face the White Sox. The Cards continue to dominate the National League Central with a five-game lead over Pittsburgh.
Your remaining games feature the Mariners in Detroit and the Diamondbacks home to Miami. Jose Fernandez of the Marlins is 2-0 with a 2.37 ERA in three starts since returning from Tommy John surgery, with 21 strikeouts and one walk.
