UPDATE: The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office has identified the 16-year-old victim as Selena Seleste Lewis of Maiden.

NEWTON, N.C.– The Catawba County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal shooting Sunday evening in Newton.
Officials say a 16-year-old girl was taking a picture of a 21-year-old man holding a gun when it fired, hitting her in the chest. Β The incident happened in the 2800 block of Rocky Ford Road.
The teen died before she could be airlifted to the hospital. Β
Officials believe the shooting was accidental.
