INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The wild year of Kyle Busch continued with another win yesterday. Busch, who missed the first 11 races of the season with a broken right leg and broken left foot, has won four of the last five Sprint Cup races and three in a row. He finished first yesterday in the Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — The Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremonies took place yesterday. The class of 2015 includes Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson, John Smoltz and Craig Biggio (BEE’-zhee-oh). Along with 40,000 fans, there were some 49 living members of the Hall on hand for the ceremony on a hot, sunny day.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — As expected, the Kansas City Royals have acquired right-handed pitcher Johnny Cueto (KWAY’-toh) from the Cincinnati Reds. In the way of compensation, the Reds are getting left-handers Brandon Finnegan, John Lamb and Cody Reed. Finnegan was Kansas City’s first-round pick in last year’s draft.
MLUNDATED (AP) — Major League Baseball has its first 14-game winner of the season. Pittsburgh’s Gerrit Cole got his 14th victory yesterday as the Pirates beat the Nationals 3-1. Cole allowed one run and seven hits in 7 2/3 innings while improving to 3-1 with a 2.40 ERA in four July starts.
B-HAOAKVILLE, Ontario (AP) — Fresh off finishing fourth in the British Open last Monday, Jason Day birdied the final three holes to win the Canadian Open yesterday. His victory spoiled the bid of David Hearn to become the first Canadian to win the Canadian Open in 61 years. Hearn, two strokes ahead of Day and Bubba Watson entering the round, had a 72 to finish third at 15 under.
