NEW YORK (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell (guh-DEHL’) has upheld a four-game suspension given to Patriots quarterback Tom Brady for his role in using underinflated footballs during the AFC championship game in January. Goodell said the quarterback told an assistant to destroy Brady’s cellphone on or just before March 6, when he met with independent investigator Ted Wells. The text messages were critical to Wells’ investigation because they could have shown details of Brady’s messages with equipment managers blamed for deflating footballs.

IRVING, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys have released running back Ryan Williams, two days before the team holds its first training camp workout. The Cowboys also signed undrafted rookie running back Gus Johnson, an undrafted rookie out of Stephen F. Austin. He will join a group led by Joseph Randle, Darren McFadden and Lance Dunbar as they try to replace reigning NFL rushing champion DeMarco Murray.

DENVER (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays are making a postseason bid by acquiring Troy Tulowitzki (too-loh-WIHTS’-kee) in a blockbuster trade that sends fellow shortstop Jose Reyes to Colorado. The Jays also get reliever LaTroy Hawkins and ship right-handed pitchers Miguel Castro, Jeff Hoffman and Jesus Tinoco to the Rockies. Tulowitzki is a five-time All-Star and a career .299 hitter, while Reyes is a lifetime .291 hitter with a .285 average this season.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Wisconsin state Assembly is backing a plan to spend $250 million in public funds on a new arena for the Milwaukee Bucks. The state assembly passed the measure today and sent it to Republican Gov. Scott Walker, who was pushing for a deal. Under the plan, taxpayers will be on the hook for $250 million initially, but that commitment will grow to $400 million with interest over 20 years.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Penguins have dealt center Brandon Sutter to the Canucks for forward Nick Bonino and defenseman Adam Clendening. The Pens also received a second-round pick in the 2016 draft, while the Canucks pick up a third-round pick in next year’s draft from Pittsburgh. Sutter tied a career-high with 21 goals last season, and Bonino delivered 15 goals and 39 points in 75 during his lone season in Vancouver.
