CHARLOTTE, NC — The Charlotte Fire Department has been named a class one department, the highest rating in the country. The announcement came at Monday’s City Council meeting.
Just 132 of more than 48,000 fire protection areas are rated class one. The designation means superior fire protection for residents and business owners, and could mean lower insurance rates for Charlotte property owners.
“The ISO, and what predates it, have been grading fire departments since 19, about 1900. And this is what insurance companies use to base insurance policies on. So this is extremely important in the fire service, to have a god ISO rating,” said CFD Chief Jon Hannan.
The Insurance Services Office classifies fire departments based on relevant data, on a scale of one to ten.
