MATTHEWS, NC — Matthews Board Commissioner, Joe Pata, officially resigned Wednesday.

Pata reportedly sent his resignation letter to Matthews Mayor, Jim Taylor, Wednesday stating he will no longer serve on the Town’s Board of Commissioners, effective immediately.

Matthews scheduled Town Hall meeting has also been cancelled.

Pata was arrested after officers were called to his home on Reverdy Oaks Drive on Friday night.  Police reports say alcohol was involved.  Officers say the woman, who lived with him, had injuries that appeared to be from a physical assault.

A spokesperson with the Town of Matthews says Pata cannot be removed from office unless convicted of a crime.

“He cannot be forced to give up his position as a board member,” said Matthews Communication Director Jen Thompson.  “That would be something he would have to do voluntarily, on his own.  However, as Mayor Pro-Tem, that’s an appointed position so our board could decide to appoint another interim Mayor Pro-Tem.”

The town board says it could make a decision later this week.  The victim’s family says she has filed a restraining order against Pata.
