KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — IOC President Thomas Bach says the Olympic body needs to show it is serious about maintaining ethical credibility and staying free of corruption.
In a clear reference to the scandal that has rocked FIFA, Bach says “these are difficult times in sport, as recent events in other sports organizations have all too clearly shown.”
Bach says “we know from our own history how long it takes to rebuild credibility,” referring to the Salt Lake City bid scandal that rocked the International Olympic Committee.
Ten IOC members resigned or were expelled, and the IOC adopted a series of reforms to clean up the organization.
Bach said: “We need to demonstrate that we are indeed walking the walk and not just talking the talk.”
Bach spoke Thursday at the opening ceremony of the 128th IOC session in Kuala Lumpur.
