
CORNELIUS, N.C.– Two people died in a crash early Sunday morning in Cornelius.
Cornelius Police say an officer observed a vehicle speeding in the 19000 block of West Catawba Avenue around 1:30 Sunday morning. Β
The officer attempted a traffic stop close to the intersection of Bethel Church Road and Jetton Road but the driver did not stop and began to flee. Β The driver almost struck a second Cornelius Police officer at the intersection of Jetton Road and West Catawba Avenue. Β
Officers began a brief pursuit but then decided to cancel the pursuit. Β They lost sight of the vehicle but then found it crashed near the intersection of Jetton Road and Meta Road. Β Police say the vehicle left the roadway, struck a tree and was fully engulfed in fire. Β
When the Cornelius Fire Department put out the fire, the two people in the vehicle were pronounced deceased. Β
The Cornelius Police Department identified the victims as Andrew Mark Krolikowski, 24 of Huntersville, and Jason Ray Monroe, 24 of Charlotte.Β
The incident is still under investigation and no further information has been released at this time. Β Β
